Our Doctors

Dr. Heather Short

Dr. Short was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended Michigan State University for two years and then transferred to Murray State University in Kentucky. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and her Masters of Science there while working as a veterinary assistant/technician for several practices.

In 2006, she graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University in Alabama. Following that, she and her husband, Dean, moved to Port Angeles, and Dr. Short began working at Sequim Animal Hospital. She bought the practice from Dr. Brian Marts in 2009.

In 2008, Dr. Short welcomed her first child, Ainsley, followed two years later by Ian. The Short family shares their home with two cats, Pickle and Cheese, and Yorkie, Bella. Though if the kids had their way, they would have at least two of every kind of animal! Dr. Short enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, and reading.

Dr. Tara Black

Dr. Tara Black was born and raised in California and enjoyed her time spent working horses on cattle and dude ranches as well as roping and doctoring calves at the yearly branding. She graduated summa cum laude with her Bachelor Of Science Degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and soon after moved with her husband to Pullman Washington for veterinary school.

She joined Sequim Animal Hospital in May 2014 with the goal of expanding the large animal aspect of the clinic. Her professional interests are mixed animal practice with an emphasis on farm animal/equine medicine. Dr. Black routinely performs Coggins/health checks, brand inspections, equine dental floats, vaccinations, deworming protocols, and small ruminant medicine/surgery.

She considers herself a first responder for field emergency calls, and depending on the situation, can medically treat and/or stabilize a large animal prior to referral to a specialty hospital. Dr. Black feels fortunate to have a wonderful close-knit veterinary community on the Olympic Peninsula.

Dr. Black and her husband, Pat, both share the passion for a ranching lifestyle. They are in the process of completing an equine riding facility where their young children will be able to practice roping, barrel racing, and other equine events, alongside Pat, who is a horse trainer and a farrier by trade. Dr. Black loves nothing more than riding and roping with her family on the weekends. She enjoys the lifestyle of the Olympic Peninsula and feels blessed every day to be a part of this beautiful area and wonderful community.

Dr. Kenneth Cox

Born in San Bernardino, California, Dr. Kenneth Cox was raised on a chicken ranch with 20,000 chickens that laid 10,000 eggs per day. After high school graduation, he joined the Army. After serving, he attended San Bernardino Valley College and then transferred to the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1968.

Dr. Cox began his career at Valley Animal Hospital in Rialto, California, and eventually bought and owned the practice for 40 years. Moving to Sequim in May 2019, he joined our team in June and quickly acquired many loyal clients. Dr. Cox loves helping people with their dogs and cats and has no plans to retire.

He married his wife, Diane, in 1968, and together they have one daughter and four grandchildren. He and Diane love traveling and the outdoors and plan to continue exploring the Olympic Peninsula.

Receptionists

Jackie Anderson

Jackie, our office manager and receptionist, is a staple here at SAH after being part of our team since 1994! She is part of a Sequim Pioneer family.

Jackie has been married to her husband, Fred, for 16 years. She has one daughter, four stepsons, and one stepdaughter. Jackie and Fred share their home with a cat (Woody), dogs (Emma and Jax), a horse (Forest), and three barn kitties. She enjoys numerous outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and horseback riding. One of her favorite adventures was an eight-day tour of Ireland on horseback in 2003.

Kelli Phipps

After being a stay-at-home parent for many years, Kelli enrolled at Peninsula College to pursue a degree specializing in medical front office systems. When the reception position became available here in October 2017, it seemed the perfect fit — especially given her love of animals.

A lifelong resident of Sequim, Kelli is married to husband, Troy, and they have three terrific sons, Trenton, Logan, and Marshall. The Phipps family shares their home with two dogs, Ginger and Sprocket, two cats, Sunny and Zelda, and a Ball Python named Zadok. In her spare time, Kelli loves to cook and bake. This has transitioned into creating and blogging about her own recipes, and she would love to one day write her own cookbook.

Jackie Anderson

Jennifer Allman

Jennifer started her career in animal medicine as a kennel assistant at another local clinic in 2006 and was promoted to kennel manager the following year. She came to Sequim Animal Hospital in 2010 as an assistant and is our Ms. Fix-It all around the clinic.

She moved to the Sequim area in 1993, where she currently lives with kitty, Ugo, and husky, Essky. She is originally from Bakersfield, California, where she grew up with large and small animals.
